# Bulgarian Residence Permit Renewal: Deadline, Documents, Steps
**To renew your Bulgarian residence permit, apply to the Migration Directorate (Дирекция „Миграция“) for your place of residence at least 14 days before it expires. The decision takes 14 days, or one month longer if the case is complex. The reason for your residence (family, representation, retirement) must still apply, and you must submit your documents again.**

## When and how is a residence permit renewed?

A residence permit is issued for a limited time. You file a renewal application before it ends. Renewal works like a new application: your file is assessed again. If the reason for your residence continues, the permit is extended.

**Timing matters.** You must apply **at least 14 days before expiry**. Do not leave it to the last day. Collecting documents, translation and paying the fee take time. We advise starting preparation at least 1-2 months ahead.

## Where do you apply?

You apply to the **Migration Directorate** office for the region of your registered address (Bulgarian: Дирекция „Миграция“). You usually apply in person. The office in the city where you are registered is competent.

## Decision time

The Directorate's decision time is **14 days**. If the case is complex and needs further checks, it can be extended by **one month**. During this time the authority may ask for missing documents. Complete them at once, because delay extends the decision time.

## Documents by basis of residence

The general documents are similar for every permit type: application form, valid passport, current residence card, address proof, health insurance and fee receipt. Extra documents depend on your basis of residence.

| Basis | What generally must be shown |
|---|---|
| **Family (Bulgarian citizen spouse)** | Proof that the marriage continues, the Bulgarian spouse's ID and residence record |
| **Family (foreign resident spouse)** | The spouse's valid residence, housing and means of support |
| **Commercial representation** | Register entry of the representation, office contract, tax compliance documents of the parent company |
| **Retirement** | Proof of pension and sufficient income to live in Bulgaria |

Confirm the latest list with the authority before applying, because it can change. We give no amounts or limits in this article. For residence through a spouse, see [residence permit through a Bulgarian spouse](/en/residence-permit-through-bulgarian-spouse/). For retirees, read [retirement residence permit in Bulgaria](/en/bulgarian-residence-permit-for-retirees/). Representation-based permits have special conditions at renewal, such as a tax debt check, which we explain in our guide to [residence through commercial representation](/en/residence-permit-through-commercial-representation/).

## What to check when you prepare

The key point is **proving that the reason for your residence still applies.** For example, someone who holds residence through marriage must show that the marriage and shared life continue. For retirement, proof that the pension continues is needed. For representation, the entry in the register must remain valid and the conditions must continue.

Also check:

- **Your passport:** it needs enough validity. If it expires soon, renew it first.
- **Your address registration:** report any change of address.
- **Your health insurance:** it should cover the whole permit period.
- **Document dates:** some documents are accepted only if issued recently.

If your documents come from abroad, allow extra time for the apostille and official translation. These can take several weeks.

## Renewal versus a new application

Renewal is filed while your permit is still valid. Once it has expired, you often need a new application, which is harder. In renewal the Directorate already knows you and has your earlier file. Renewal filed on time therefore usually runs more smoothly. If documents you submitted earlier have changed, submit the current versions.

## Step-by-step renewal

1. **Check the date.** Look at your card's expiry date and count the 14-day limit.
2. **Collect documents.** Prepare the documents for your basis; foreign documents need an apostille and Bulgarian translation.
3. **Pay the fee.** Attach the receipt to your file.
4. **Apply to the Migration Directorate.** Go to the office in your place of residence.
5. **Wait for the decision.** It takes 14 days, or one month longer if complex.
6. **Collect the new card.** After approval the new residence card is issued.

## Can I travel abroad during renewal?

If you plan to leave Bulgaria while the application is pending, be careful. Without a valid residence card you may face problems on return. Ask the Directorate before you travel which document you can use to re-enter. Carry your application receipt and copies of your documents.

## What happens if you are late?

If you do not apply before the permit ends, your residence expires and your legal stay is interrupted. In general, being late can mean:

- you may be treated as staying in Bulgaria without permission,
- you may face a fine,
- in the longer term, sanctions such as removal and an entry ban may come into play,
- if your continuous residence is broken, your path to **permanent residence** can be affected.

If you have already missed the date, do not wait; speak to a specialist at once. Read why continuity matters in our guide to [permanent residence in Bulgaria](/en/bulgaria-permanent-residence/). Long legal residence also matters for questions such as [can I get Bulgarian citizenship through my spouse](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-through-a-spouse/).

> Important: After you file, ask the authority to confirm in writing how your status is treated until the decision.
