# Certificate of Bulgarian Origin: What It Is and How to Get It
**A certificate of Bulgarian origin (Bulgarian: удостоверение за български произход) is an official document confirming that a person is of Bulgarian descent. Since 2025 it is issued by the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (ИАБЧ), which reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You apply in person in Sofia, by post or through the e-government portal. The decision takes 14 days. It is not required in every citizenship case.**

This guide explains what the certificate does, who needs it, which documents are required and how the application works.

## What is a certificate of Bulgarian origin?

The certificate is an official statement that you, or your ancestors, are Bulgarian. The issuing body is the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (abbreviated ИАБЧ; its former name was ДАБЧ). Since 2025 the agency has been part of the structure of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is not an identity document and it does not grant citizenship on its own. It records your Bulgarian origin. That record is then used in procedures where origin has to be proven.

## When do you need it?

The most common confusion is thinking the certificate is a must in every citizenship file. It depends on the case. In general terms:

- **Emigrant families (for example in Türkiye or another country):** origin is often proven directly in the citizenship application to the Ministry of Justice, using the documents of a parent or grandparent. In these files a separate origin certificate is often not needed.
- **People with no direct Bulgarian record:** if you cannot reach an ancestor's record in Bulgaria, the certificate can be a strong way to show your origin.
- **Type D visas and residence procedures:** the certificate may be requested to benefit from the facilitations available to people of Bulgarian origin.

Which route suits you depends on your family's emigration history and on the documents you hold. To check your own situation, see [who can get Bulgarian citizenship](/en/who-can-get-bulgarian-citizenship/).

## Required documents

In general the application includes:

| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Application form | Completed in the format the agency requires |
| Identity document | Copy of your passport or ID card |
| Original document showing a Bulgarian ancestor | At least one Bulgarian ancestor (parent, grandparent) must be shown |
| Declaration of Bulgarian national consciousness | A written statement that you regard yourself as being of Bulgarian origin |
| Translations | Foreign documents are translated into Bulgarian |

The current list and forms are published on the agency's official website (aba.government.bg). Always check the latest version before you apply.

> **Important:** The original of the document showing the ancestor is needed. A photocopy alone may not be enough. Keep the original safe before you send it for translation.

For documents issued in your home country, read our guide to the [civil registry extract and apostille](/en/civil-registry-extract-and-apostille-guide/).

## Step-by-step application

1. **Collect the documents:** your ID and the papers showing your ancestor.
2. **Translate and legalise:** have foreign documents translated into Bulgarian in the accepted form. Add an apostille where needed.
3. **Write the declaration:** complete the statement of Bulgarian national consciousness.
4. **Submit:** in person at the agency in Sofia, by post or through the e-government portal.
5. **Wait for the decision:** the agency decides within 14 days.
6. **Receive the certificate:** use it in your citizenship or residence file.

## Ways to apply

- **In person (Sofia):** the file is checked on the spot, so missing papers are seen immediately. It requires travel.
- **By post:** no travel, but the file must be complete. Fixing gaps takes longer.
- **E-government portal:** needs an electronic identity and signature, which are not always available to people living abroad.

We can help you choose the way that fits your file.

## Certificate versus citizenship application

Getting the certificate does not mean you have applied for citizenship. The citizenship application is separate. It is filed with the Ministry of Justice or through consulates, and in practice the whole process usually takes 1.5-3 years. You can find the steps in [how to apply for Bulgarian citizenship](/en/how-to-apply-for-bulgarian-citizenship/).

In short: the certificate shows your origin; the citizenship application gives you citizenship. They should not be confused.

## Tips for a smooth application

Choose the oldest and clearest document that shows your origin. The ancestor's document should be legible and the names clear. Check that names are spelled the same across all papers. If your records differ between countries, solve that before applying; see [name equivalence certificate](/en/name-equivalence-certificate-bulgaria/).

Write the declaration carefully in your own words. Keep copies of the whole application, because you may need them again later for citizenship or residence.

## Common mistakes

- **Assuming the certificate is always required:** an unnecessary application wastes time.
- **Applying with photocopies:** the original is requested.
- **Inconsistent names in translation:** extra proof may be needed.
- **Using outdated forms:** check the official site first.
