# How Long Does Bulgarian Citizenship Take? Evaluation Process and Timelines
**Bulgarian citizenship takes on average 1.5 to 3 years in practice, counted from the first submission of documents to the Bulgarian authorities until the decision becomes final. The time depends on the scope of the application, how busy the institutions are and any requests for extra documents. Missing or wrong documents delay a file the most; checking them before you apply shortens the wait.**

Giving one number for "how long?" can mislead, but a realistic range is possible. This article walks through the stages, roughly how long each takes and how to get through the wait with less stress. If you do not yet know how to file, first read [how to apply for Bulgarian citizenship](/en/how-to-apply-for-bulgarian-citizenship/).

## How long is the total?

In practice the total is **1.5 to 3 years**. This is not the processing time of a single institution but the journey of the file from start to finish. Some are quicker; others reach 3 years because of additional checks. The stage times below are approximate, and some overlap.

## The evaluation process, stage by stage

| Stage | What happens | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Registration and file creation | The application is received and a file number is given | varies by file |
| 2. Mandatory checks | Interior and security-related institutions examine the file | varies by file |
| 3. Expert review and extra documents | Gaps and record mismatches are checked | varies by file |
| 4. Decision | Citizenship Council and higher-level approval | varies by file |
| 5. Delivery of the certificate | Collected in Sofia or at the consulate | varies by file |

The sum of these stages corresponds to the 1.5-3 year range. There are waiting periods between stages; a file staying in the same status for months is normal. For the meaning of each status on screen, see [the stages of the Bulgarian citizenship file](/en/stages-of-the-bulgarian-citizenship-application/).

## The stages in short

**Registration and file creation.** If you applied in Sofia, the file is usually opened on the day. Through a consulate, your documents first travel to Sofia, so the file number may appear later.

**Mandatory checks.** This is the longest stage. Identity and file data are verified by the relevant institutions in Bulgaria. There is nothing you can do except keep your contact details up to date.

**Expert review.** If documents are missing or inconsistent, the file moves to an "irregularity" status and you are given time to supply more documents. Sending them in time matters.

**Decision.** The Citizenship Council reviews the file. A positive opinion goes to the higher authority for approval, and approved files move to the implementation stage.

**Delivery.** If you applied in Sofia, you book an appointment and collect the certificate from the Ministry of Justice. If you applied through a consulate, the certificate is sent to the consulate.

## What makes the process longer?

- **Missing or wrong documents:** A request for extra documents can stop the process for months.
- **Mismatches in records:** Differences in names, dates or places need further checking.
- **Document verification:** Old civil records and criminal record certificates may be examined more closely, which usually takes a few months.
- **Workload:** The number of applications in the institutions affects the wait.
- **No reply:** If you do not answer a request within the given time, the file can be closed.

## What you can do to shorten it

Some factors are outside your control, but these are not:

1. **Choose the right route.** Filing under the wrong route means starting again. See [requirements for Bulgarian citizenship](/en/requirements-for-bulgarian-citizenship/).
2. **Submit complete documents.** Get the apostille and sworn Bulgarian translation right.
3. **Resolve name differences early.** If needed, obtain a [name equivalence certificate](/en/name-equivalence-certificate-bulgaria/).
4. **Send extra documents immediately.** The time limit is fixed.
5. **Check your file.** Use the [file check system](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-file-status-check-launched/) to watch for changes.

## Does the filing route change the time?

Filing in Sofia or through a consulate changes only the starting step. With a consulate, documents first reach Sofia by diplomatic mail, so there may be a few weeks of difference at the start. The main time is spent in institutional review and is similar either way. On the origin route, the strength of the documents proving origin affects how long review takes. We explain the origin certificate in [certificate of Bulgarian origin](/en/certificate-of-bulgarian-origin/).

## How should you manage expectations?

Treat 1.5 years as the lower limit and 3 years as the upper limit when planning. Do not tie travel, moving, job or school plans to an exact citizenship date. If you have the right to apply, starting early brings the finish line closer, so it is usually best to file as soon as your documents are ready.

If a whole family applies, each person's file can move at its own pace, so a time gap between family members' decisions is normal. Shorter times you may have heard about earlier, such as "8 to 18 months", do not reflect today's practice; being patient and realistic helps you and your family.

## What can you do while waiting?

- Keep your phone, e-mail and address up to date.
- Store your file number and PIN safely.
- Prepare for the ID and passport steps; see [how to get a Bulgarian passport](/en/how-to-get-a-bulgarian-passport/).
- If the result is negative, read [what to do if Bulgarian citizenship is refused](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-application-refused/).

## Frequently asked questions

<details><summary>How long does Bulgarian citizenship take?</summary>

In practice 1.5 to 3 years, that is 18 to 36 months. The exact time depends on your file and the workload of the institutions.

</details>

<details><summary>Why does it take so long?</summary>

The file is examined by several institutions. Identity, records and security checks run one after the other, which takes time.

</details>

<details><summary>My file has been in the same status for months. Is that normal?</summary>

Usually yes. A file can stay in one status for a long time during review. If no request for documents or irregularity has been announced, waiting is enough.

</details>

<details><summary>Can the process be sped up?</summary>

You cannot speed up the institutions' review. You can avoid unnecessary delay by submitting complete documents and answering requests at once.

</details>

<details><summary>How do I follow my file?</summary>

Use the file number and PIN from your application to check it online.
