Even if your spouse is a Bulgarian citizen, citizenship does not pass from a spouse automatically. Marriage opens two routes: a residence permit through your spouse, and later an application for naturalisation through marriage. Citizenship requires residence and Bulgarian language knowledge. The easier terms of the origin route do not apply to spouses.
“My spouse is Bulgarian. Can I become a citizen too?” is a very common question. The answer has two parts. First you get residence. Citizenship is a second and longer step. This article explains the difference between the two and how the route works.
Residence through a spouse is not the same as citizenship
These two topics are often confused.
| Residence through a spouse | Citizenship through marriage | |
|---|---|---|
| What it gives | The right to stay legally in Bulgaria | Bulgarian citizenship and passport |
| When | After the marriage and documents | After residence and the residence period |
| Language | Not required | Required, Bulgarian knowledge is checked |
| Time | Card issued in about 3 months | The application takes 1.5-3 years in total |
For residence details, see residence permit through a Bulgarian spouse.
The marriage must first be reported to Bulgaria
A marriage made abroad is valid from the date it was made. But before the residence application, it must be entered into the Bulgarian civil register. This is done through the municipality or a consulate; an apostille and official Bulgarian translation of the marriage certificate are required. For a step-by-step guide, see registering a marriage in Bulgaria.
How is residence obtained through a spouse?
The foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen can receive an “EU citizen family member residence card”.
- Register the marriage: It is entered into the Bulgarian record.
- Get a D visa: A visa is needed to stay in Bulgaria for over 3 months.
- Apply to the Migration Directorate: The application goes through Дирекция „Миграция“.
- Receive the card: Continuous residence is granted for up to 5 years. The card is issued within 3 months.
- Permanent residence: After 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence, permanent residence can be obtained.
The application also includes the document showing the spouse’s Bulgarian citizenship and the marriage certificate. When renewing, apply at least 14 days before the permit ends.
General conditions for citizenship through marriage
Marriage can give you an advantage in a naturalisation application. But the conditions depend on your situation. The general framework is:
- Being an adult (over 18).
- A clean criminal record.
- Legal residence in Bulgaria; the period depends on your permit type and marital status.
- Knowledge of Bulgarian: language proficiency must be shown.
- Means of living: you must show you can support yourself.
Periods and exact conditions can change with legislation. So we check the current position before the application. Instead of giving you figures, we prepare a clear roadmap for your file.
How does it differ from the origin route?
If your mother, father or grandparent is a Bulgarian citizen, you apply on the origin route. On that route there is no Bulgarian language or residence requirement. Through a spouse this ease does not exist. But if your own parents, rather than your spouse’s, are of Bulgarian descent, also consider the origin route: who can get Bulgarian citizenship.
I am the Bulgarian citizen and my spouse is abroad: what is the route?
For the foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen, a family member residence card is prepared. Your spouse enters Bulgaria with a D visa, which allows a stay of more than 3 months. Then the application for the residence card is made to the Migration Directorate. Visa documents are a separate topic; see our family reunification service.
Can I work after marriage?
As a rule, a family member card holder can work in Bulgaria. Opening your own business may need a separate registration. We give information according to your file.
Preparing for the language requirement
As you approach the citizenship stage, Bulgarian knowledge comes up. This requirement does not concern origin-route applicants; it applies to applicants through marriage. So it makes sense to start learning Bulgarian during the residence period. Everyday conversation, filling in forms and short reading matter for proficiency. We clarify which kind of document the authority wants before the application.
Dual citizenship
A Bulgarian citizen may also remain a citizen of another country. Check the rules on your own country’s side for your situation. For the rights Bulgarian citizenship gives, see advantages of dual citizenship.
Children
A child born of the marriage is a citizen by birth if one parent was a Bulgarian citizen at the time of birth. For this, a birth registration is made. See birth registration and Bulgarian citizenship for children.
Points to watch
- Citizenship by investment was abolished in 2022; such an offer is not correct.
- The marriage is expected to be genuine and lasting.
- Documents must carry an apostille and official translation.
- If your surname changed after marriage, check that your Bulgarian records are consistent.
