Residence card for the foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen

If you are married to a Bulgarian citizen and are not a Bulgarian or EU citizen yourself, you can apply for a “residence card for a family member of a Union citizen”. You apply at the Migration Directorate where you live. The card is issued within 3 months of your application, and continuous residence is granted for up to 5 years. The first condition is that your marriage is recorded in the Bulgarian civil registers.

What is a residence permit through a spouse?

Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. The foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen has the right to live in Bulgaria with them. This route is easier than a normal residence permit for foreigners. You do not need to start a company or prove a set income level. The main conditions are that the marriage is genuine and that your Bulgarian spouse lives in Bulgaria.

The document is called the residence card for a family member of a Union citizen (in Bulgarian: карта за пребиваване на член на семейството на гражданин на Съюза). With this card you can live, travel and work in Bulgaria legally.

Who can apply?

  • Foreign spouses who are officially married to a Bulgarian citizen,
  • Spouses married in Bulgaria, in Türkiye or in any other country, as long as the marriage is recorded in the Bulgarian registers,
  • Couples where the Bulgarian spouse also lives in Bulgaria.

If your Bulgarian spouse lives in another EU country, the case is assessed differently. Send us your file first and we will review it together.

First condition: record the marriage in Bulgaria

A marriage made abroad is valid from the date it was made. But for Bulgarian authorities to recognise it, it must be entered in the Bulgarian civil register. This is done through the municipality or the consulate. The marriage certificate is apostilled and translated into official Bulgarian.

You cannot apply for the residence card until the marriage is recorded. For a step-by-step explanation, read our guide on registering a foreign marriage in Bulgaria.

Required documents

In general, the Migration Directorate asks for the following:

Document Note
Application form Completed in the format the Directorate requires
Marriage certificate Apostilled and translated into Bulgarian; proof the marriage is recorded in Bulgaria
Passport Valid passport of the foreign spouse
Bulgarian spouse’s ID ID card or Bulgarian passport
Address registration Proof of your Bulgarian address (rental contract or property document)
Fee receipt Proof that the state fee has been paid
Photograph Biometric photo that meets the rules

The Directorate may ask for extra documents. Confirm the latest list with the authority or your adviser before you apply. Fees can change, so we do not give amounts here.

Step-by-step application process

  1. Record your marriage in Bulgaria. Submit the certificate, apostille and translation to the municipality.
  2. Enter Bulgaria. If you need a visa, get it from the consulate. See family reunification visa and documents.
  3. Register your address. Show where you will live in Bulgaria.
  4. Prepare your documents. Keep the originals and the translations ready.
  5. Apply to the Migration Directorate. You apply in person at the office (Дирекция „Миграция“) where you live. You pay the fee.
  6. Collect your card. The decision and card come within 3 months of your application.

Length of stay and permanent residence

The family member residence card gives continuous residence for up to 5 years. You file for renewal before it ends. Read more in our guide on renewing a Bulgarian residence permit.

After 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence you can apply for permanent residence. Permanent residence greatly reduces the renewal burden. See permanent residence in Bulgaria for the full picture. Long legal residence can also support a later citizenship application.

Right to work

The holder of a family member residence card can work in Bulgaria without a separate work permit. You can take a job or start your own business. Insurance and tax rules follow the same framework as for Bulgarian citizens. For details, see right to work with family residence.

Important: Your card makes your stay legal. Do not forget to renew it before it expires.

Practical notes for spouses from abroad

If your marriage took place outside Bulgaria (for example in Türkiye or your home country), your certificate comes from the civil registry office there. The apostille is added by the competent authority of that country. A sworn translator then translates it into Bulgarian.

Names must match in all documents. A Bulgarian spouse’s name is sometimes spelled differently in foreign and Bulgarian records. Such a difference can stop the process, so fix it first.

The card is issued so you can live together with your Bulgarian spouse. You therefore need a shared address, shown by an address record and a rental contract or similar document. If you live in different cities, the application may be harder. Talk to us before applying.

How long does it take?

Count the marriage registration and the card application together. Registration can take weeks because of the apostille, translation and municipal steps. The card itself is issued within 3 months of the application. If you plan to move, start the process months before.

Common mistakes

  • Applying before the marriage is recorded in Bulgaria,
  • Submitting a marriage certificate without an apostille or with an unofficial translation,
  • Applying without an address registration,
  • Delaying the renewal until the card has almost expired.

Let us handle the process

Frequently asked questions

Do I get a residence permit automatically when I marry a Bulgarian citizen?

No. The marriage must be recorded in the Bulgarian registers and you must apply to the Migration Directorate. If the application is accepted, you receive the family member residence card.

How long does it take to get the residence card?

The card is issued within 3 months of your application. Missing documents can extend this, so make sure your file is complete before you apply.

Can I work after I get a residence permit through my spouse?

Yes. The holder of a family member residence card can work without a separate work permit. You can also start your own business.

What happens to my residence if we divorce?

Divorce can affect your right to stay. Depending on the facts, you may keep residence on another basis. In that case we advise showing your file to a specialist.

When can I get permanent residence?

You can apply after 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence. Long periods outside Bulgaria may affect the continuity requirement.
