A foreign family member of a Bulgarian or EU citizen who holds a residence card can work in Bulgaria without a separate work permit. This right comes from EU free movement rules. Before you start, you only need to complete practical steps: a personal number, insurance and tax registration. Other types of residence follow different rules.
This article explains how the right to work works with family residence, which registrations you need, and how it differs from other permits.
What is the right to work with family reunification?
For most foreigners in Bulgaria, working requires a separate work permit and an employer’s approval. Family members of Bulgarian or EU citizens are an exception. If your spouse is a Bulgarian citizen and you hold an “EU citizen family member residence card”, you do not need a separate work permit to take a job.
This right covers:
- The foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen
- The children of a Bulgarian citizen and, in some cases, other relatives who depend on them
The residence card itself proves your right to work in Bulgaria. In most cases, showing it to the employer is enough. We explain how to get the card in residence permit through a Bulgarian spouse.
What kind of work is allowed?
A family member card holder can generally work on terms similar to citizens:
- Employment: Working for an employer under an employment contract.
- Self-employment: Sole trader, freelancer or company owner.
- Extra conditions for some professions: Regulated jobs such as medicine or law also require diploma recognition and professional registration.
So the residence right can be used without a work permit, but it does not remove the special rules of each profession.
Registrations before you start
Even without a work permit, practical registrations are needed.
1. Personal number (ЛНЧ or EGN)
In Bulgaria, tax, insurance and banking all depend on a personal number. Foreigners usually receive an ЛНЧ (личен номер на чужденец, a foreigner’s personal number). Other number types may apply as your status develops. The number used by citizens is explained in what is an EGN.
2. Tax registration
When you are hired, the employer reports your employment contract to the Bulgarian tax authority (НАП). If you start your own business, you handle tax and insurance registration yourself or through an adviser. Tax liability generally depends on the source of income and how long you stay in Bulgaria. Ask separately about double taxation.
3. Social and health insurance
As an employee, your contributions are withheld and reported by the employer. This gives you access to healthcare and social security. Self-employed people pay their contributions themselves.
4. Bank account
A Bulgarian bank account is useful for salary and tax payments. Banks usually ask for the residence card, passport and personal number.
Step by step: how to start working
- Get your residence card. It shows your family member status and right to work.
- Confirm your personal number. It should appear on your card or residence documents.
- Give the employer your documents. Residence card, passport and, if needed, diplomas with Bulgarian translation.
- Sign the employment contract. The employer reports it to the tax authority.
- Open your bank account. You need it for your salary.
- Track your card’s validity. Apply for residence permit renewal before it expires.
Right to work under other residence types
Family reunification is not the same for every foreigner. In general:
| Situation | Right to work |
|---|---|
| Family member of a Bulgarian/EU citizen | No separate work permit needed |
| Residence for work | Permit is usually tied to a specific employer and job |
| Student residence | Right to work may be limited |
| Commercial representation residence | Residence is tied to the representation’s activity |
| Family members of other foreign residents | Depends on the main residence type; ask separately |
Important: If your spouse is not a Bulgarian citizen but a foreigner with a residence permit in Bulgaria, your right to work depends on the type of the main permit and current rules. Do not rely on the general rule. Have your file checked.
Right to work and permanent residence
As your legal and continuous residence grows, the path to permanent residence opens. With permanent status your right to work continues and the paperwork is lighter. See Bulgaria permanent residence for details.
Common mistakes
- Applying for an unnecessary work permit: Family member card holders do not need one. It wastes time and money.
- Relying on the wrong residence type: If your spouse is not Bulgarian, the rules differ.
- Registering for insurance and tax late: Undeclared work puts you and the employer at risk.
- Submitting diplomas without translation: Some professions require diploma recognition.
- Missing the card’s expiry date: When the card lapses, your right to work is at risk too.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a work permit if my spouse is a Bulgarian citizen?
No. If you hold a family member residence card as the foreign spouse of a Bulgarian citizen, you can work without a separate work permit.
What is an ЛНЧ and do I need it to work?
An ЛНЧ is a personal number given to foreigners. Tax, insurance and banking depend on it, so you need it before you start working.
Can I work without a residence card?
No. The right to work rests on a valid family member residence card. If the card application is still pending, clarify your work situation in advance.
Can I start my own business?
Yes. A family member card holder can set up a sole proprietorship or a company. Regulated professions may have extra diploma and registration conditions.
My spouse is a foreigner with Bulgarian residence, not a citizen. Can I work?
In that case the right depends on your spouse’s permit type and current rules. Get advice on your own file instead of relying on the general rule.
