Citizenship through Bulgarian origin has no language test, no residence requirement and no income requirement, so you do not have to speak Bulgarian. When citizenship is granted through marriage or residence, knowledge of Bulgarian is required. The route you apply under decides whether a language requirement applies to you.
This guide explains which routes carry a language requirement, what the interview covers and how to prepare.
Is there a language requirement for Bulgarian citizenship?
It depends on the route. Bulgarian citizenship is mainly acquired in two different ways:
| Route | Language requirement |
|---|---|
| Bulgarian origin (descent) | No language test |
| Marriage or long-term residence | Knowledge of Bulgarian is required |
Under the origin route you prove with documents that you have Bulgarian roots. Under the marriage or residence routes your ties to Bulgaria, integration and language skills are assessed.
Language requirement under the origin route
If your ancestors left Bulgaria and you can document your origin, you do not need:
- A Bulgarian language exam
- To reside in Bulgaria
- To show a specific income
The application rests on documents that prove your origin and family line. To prepare them, read our civil registry extract and apostille guide and the required documents article. For eligibility, see who can get Bulgarian citizenship.
Language requirement under marriage or residence
For naturalisation through marriage to a Bulgarian citizen or long-term residence, knowledge of Bulgarian is among the conditions. Other conditions such as residence period, background and public order are assessed as well.
The format and level of the language check can change over time, so we do not state an exact standard here. Confirm the current rules with the Ministry of Justice or your adviser before applying.
How is Bulgarian assessed?
Knowledge of Bulgarian is checked by answering questions and simple conversation in the format set by the competent authority. The aim is whether you can express yourself in everyday life, not whether you speak literary Bulgarian.
Questions usually touch on:
- Personal details: name, family, place of residence
- Daily life: work, home, shopping
- Ties to Bulgaria: why you apply, family links
- Basic general knowledge: the country, flag, regions
What is asked in the interview?
Even where there is no language test, an interview may take place and usually covers identity, family and origin. We have collected sample questions and tips in questions asked in the Bulgarian citizenship interview. You can also read about the interview stages.
Tips for learning Bulgarian
If your route has a language requirement:
- Study regularly: short daily sessions beat long irregular ones.
- Practise speaking: chat with a Bulgarian speaker about everyday topics.
- Learn Cyrillic: reading helps with official documents.
- Memorise basic phrases: introductions, family, work and address.
- Listen a lot: watch Bulgarian news, songs and films.
Do not give up because of the language
Many people think “I do not speak Bulgarian, so I cannot apply”. Yet most descendants of families who left Bulgaria can apply through origin without a language test. Being born in Türkiye, Moldova or elsewhere, or not speaking Bulgarian, does not remove that right.
What matters is that your documents are complete and correct. Family records, civil registry documents and the certificate of Bulgarian origin are therefore central to the file.
Families with mixed routes
In one family, members may apply through different routes. One person may apply by origin, the spouse by marriage. The language requirement then concerns only the person applying by marriage. Separating the files correctly saves time. For children, shorter options such as birth registration should also be checked.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the language rule applies to every route: causing needless worry under the origin route.
- Choosing the wrong route: a person with documentable origin who chooses marriage or residence lengthens the process.
- Preparing documents late: records, apostilles and translations take time.
- Not checking current rules: they can change, so confirm before applying.
Which route should you choose?
If your Bulgarian origin can be documented, descent is usually the easiest and most suitable route, with no language test. Without origin, marriage or residence applies. The whole process can take 1.5-3 years in practice. See our citizenship services to decide.
