Bulgaria family reunification visa and consulate documents

Spouses and children who will join family in Bulgaria apply for a long-stay (type D) visa at the Bulgarian consulate in their home country. With the visa they enter Bulgaria, then apply to the Migration Directorate for a residence card. The consulate asks for proof of marriage or kinship, a passport, an address and insurance. The rules for the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen differ from those for the spouse of a foreign resident.

What is a family reunification visa?

A visa is permission to enter Bulgaria, issued by a consulate. The type D visa is for long stays. You enter the country with it and then apply for residence. The D visa is not a residence permit itself; you receive the residence card after you arrive. To read more about the visa itself, see what is a Bulgarian type D visa.

In family reunification, the visa goes to the spouse or parent of someone living in Bulgaria. The consulate you apply to tells you which visa type you need. Practice can change over time.

Two different cases: spouse of a Bulgarian citizen and spouse of a foreign resident

This difference is important, because the conditions and documents differ.

Spouse of a Bulgarian (EU) citizen Spouse of a foreign resident
Basis EU citizen family member right National rules on family reunification for foreigners
Legal framework EU rules, simpler Foreigners legislation, stricter
Usual conditions Recorded and genuine marriage Residence status of the spouse in Bulgaria, means of support and housing
Result Residence card for a family member of a Union citizen Residence permit on a family reunification basis

In short, the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen does not face the heavier support conditions. The spouse of a foreign resident usually has to prove housing, income and insurance separately. Make clear which group you belong to before you apply.

If you are the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen, read our main guide on residence permit through a Bulgarian spouse.

Documents asked at the consulate

The list can differ between consulates. The general categories are:

  • Application form and photo: the visa form and a biometric photo.
  • Passport: a valid travel document with enough validity left.
  • Proof of the family link: marriage certificate or birth certificate (for children), apostilled and translated into Bulgarian.
  • Documents of the spouse in Bulgaria: ID or passport if Bulgarian; residence document if foreign.
  • Accommodation: a rental contract or property document for the address in Bulgaria.
  • Health insurance: insurance valid in Bulgaria.
  • Means of support: proof of enough resources for the family, which matters most for the spouse of a foreign resident.
  • Criminal record certificate: requested in some cases.
  • Fee receipt: proof that the visa fee has been paid.

We give no amounts here. Ask the consulate for the required insurance and support figures. Most documents need an apostille and an official Bulgarian translation. An apostille is the official stamp that makes a document valid in another country.

Step-by-step process

  1. Identify your case. Are you the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen or of a foreign resident?
  2. Prove the marriage or kinship. For a Bulgarian spouse, record the marriage in Bulgaria first; see registering a foreign marriage in Bulgaria.
  3. Prepare the documents. Obtain apostilles and translations.
  4. Book a consulate appointment. Apply for a long-stay (type D) visa.
  5. Receive the visa and enter Bulgaria. Enter within the visa validity.
  6. Apply to the Migration Directorate. Request the residence card from the Дирекция „Миграция“ office where you live.

Family reunification for children

Children can follow the same route. Their file covers the birth certificate and parents’ details. See family reunification for children for more.

Common problems in applications

  • Documents without an apostille: a marriage or birth certificate may be refused without one.
  • Unofficial translations: translations must be official and filed in the right order.
  • Name differences: names must be spelled the same in the passport, marriage certificate and Bulgarian ID.
  • Documents that are too old: some documents are valid only if issued within the last few months.
  • Missing address proof: the address in Bulgaria must be clearly shown.

Most of these problems are easy to fix when noticed early. Having the file checked before the consulate visit saves time.

What happens after the visa?

After entering Bulgaria with the visa, you must apply to the Migration Directorate within a short time. Do not miss this window. Your residence card application must be made before the visa expires, and your address registration should be ready. After you receive the card, your right to work and other rights apply.

A short preparation checklist

Before you go to the consulate, answer these questions:

  1. Am I the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen or of a foreign resident?
  2. Is my marriage certificate apostilled and officially translated?
  3. Is my address in Bulgaria documented?
  4. Is my health insurance valid in Bulgaria?
  5. Does my passport have enough validity?

If all five answers are yes, your file is largely ready.

Important: If a visa application is refused, the reasons are given in writing. You can often complete the missing documents and apply again.

Frequently asked questions

Is a type D visa also a residence permit?

No. The type D visa allows long-stay entry into Bulgaria. You then apply separately to the Migration Directorate for the residence card.

Does the spouse of a Bulgarian citizen need a visa?

It depends on the spouse’s nationality and the consulate’s practice. Where a visa is needed, simpler rules apply to family members of EU citizens. Get current information from your consulate.

Which documents need an apostille?

Official documents issued abroad, such as marriage and birth certificates, usually need one. Apostilled documents are also submitted with an official Bulgarian translation.

How long does the visa take?

It depends on the consulate and on how complete your file is. Missing documents extend the time, so complete the file before you apply.

What if my visa is refused?

You can read the reasons and complete what is missing. For a new application or an appeal, we advise having a specialist review your file.
