How to apply for Bulgarian citizenship

To apply for Bulgarian citizenship, first decide which route you use (origin, marriage or residence), then prepare your documents with an apostille and a sworn Bulgarian translation. The application is filed in person with the Ministry of Justice in Sofia or through a Bulgarian consulate abroad. Once your file is created you receive a file number and PIN to check its status online.

The procedure looks complicated at first, but the steps are clear. This article lists them in order. To learn who can apply, read who can get Bulgarian citizenship; for the conditions, read requirements for Bulgarian citizenship.

Step 1: Choose your route

There is no single type of application. The routes are Bulgarian origin, marriage, being the child of a Bulgarian citizen and long-term residence. Your document list and timing depend on the route. Filing under the wrong route can cost months or lead to a refusal.

On the origin route you do not need Bulgarian, residence or income; you need to document the origin. Other routes have different conditions.

Step 2: Prepare the documents

Documents vary, but most files include:

  • Civil registry extract and birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate (if relevant)
  • Documents showing Bulgarian origin or family relationship
  • Criminal record certificate
  • Copy of passport or ID, photographs

Every document issued abroad must carry an apostille and be translated into Bulgarian by a sworn translator. See our guide to civil registry extracts and the apostille and our translation service.

On the origin route the key document is the certificate of Bulgarian origin; read certificate of Bulgarian origin. If names differ across records, a name equivalence certificate may be needed.

Step 3: Fill in the application

The application and its forms must be filled in completely, and the data must match your documents exactly. Even a small difference in the spelling of a name, a date of birth or a place name can delay the file. For help, see our tips for filling in the application form.

Step 4: Where do you file?

Option How it works
Ministry of Justice, Sofia You file in person in Sofia. Your file is created straight away.
Bulgarian consulate abroad You file at the consulate in the country where you live. The consulate forwards the documents to the Ministry of Justice.

Official information about Bulgarian missions is available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Bulgaristanvatandas.com is not an official institution; it provides information and guidance.

Step 5: Get your file number and check it

When your application is accepted you receive a file number and PIN. With them you can check the file online. We explain the online tool in the citizenship file check system and the meaning of each status in the stages of the Bulgarian citizenship file.

Step 6: Follow the process

Your file is examined by institutions in Bulgaria. This is the longest part. In practice the whole procedure usually takes 1.5 to 3 years. We describe each stage in how long Bulgarian citizenship takes. If extra documents are requested, you must send them within the time given.

Step 7: Decision and citizenship certificate

If the decision is positive, you collect your citizenship certificate from the Ministry of Justice in Sofia or at the consulate where you applied. Then you move on to the Bulgarian ID and passport; see how to get a Bulgarian passport. If the application is refused, see what to do if Bulgarian citizenship is refused.

Preparation order we recommend

  1. Draw the family tree. Identify the person who gives you the right (parent, grandparent, spouse).
  2. Count the documents you have. Birth, marriage and civil registry records.
  3. Identify what is missing. Documents from your home country are separate from records requested from Bulgaria.
  4. Do the apostille and translation last. If a mistake appears, you do not pay twice.
  5. Choose where to file. In person in Sofia if you can travel, otherwise the consulate.

How does a consultant help?

You can file the application yourself. Spotting record errors, name differences and missing documents before filing takes experience, though. We review your documents, tell you which route is right, help with preparing and translating documents and follow the file status with you. The cost items are explained in fees for Bulgarian citizenship. No consultant can guarantee the result; the decision belongs to the Bulgarian authorities.

What happens after you apply?

Your file passes through several stages: registration, mandatory checks by the competent institutions, expert review and a final decision. You may be asked for extra documents, so keep your contact details current. Check the file now and then; there is no need to check weekly, since the status often stays the same for weeks.

Most common application mistakes

  • Documents submitted without an apostille or translation
  • Name and date differences left unexplained
  • Wrong route chosen
  • No reply to a request for extra documents
  • Outdated criminal record or civil registry extract

Most of these are avoided by an expert check before filing. See also key points to watch in a citizenship application.
