The requirements for Bulgarian citizenship depend on the route you use. On the Bulgarian origin route there is no language, residence or income requirement; you only need to document your origin. Marriage and long-term residence routes require conditions such as age, a clean criminal record, a period of legal residence, a source of income and knowledge of Bulgarian. Citizenship by investment was abolished in 2022.
There is no single list of requirements, because Bulgarian citizenship law opens different doors for people in different situations. First find your route, then read the conditions for that route. This article covers legal conditions only. For the question “which group am I in?”, see who can get Bulgarian citizenship.
Requirements at a glance
| Route | Bulgarian language | Residence in Bulgaria | Income |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulgarian origin | Not required | Not required | Not required |
| Marriage | Required | Marriage and legal residence period required | Linked to the general conditions |
| Long-term residence (general route) | Required | Legal, continuous residence period required | Required |
| Child of a Bulgarian citizen | Usually not required | Not required | Not required |
Age and criminal record are checked in every case. “Required” in the table means the condition applies on that route. The exact scope can vary with your file, so use the table to find your direction, not to make the final decision.
Basic conditions checked in every application
- Age: The applicant must be over 18. Children under 18 normally become citizens through a parent’s application or birth registration.
- Criminal record: You must not have a serious criminal conviction in Bulgaria or abroad. Bulgarian authorities ask for a certificate from you and from the countries where you have lived.
- Correct and complete documents: Documents must carry an apostille and be translated into Bulgarian by a sworn translator. See civil registry extracts and the apostille.
Requirements on the origin route
If you can prove that your mother, father, grandfather or grandmother is of Bulgarian origin, this route suits you. You do not need to live in Bulgaria, speak Bulgarian or show income. What is asked from you is documents showing the origin, and the certificate of Bulgarian origin serves this purpose. Details are in certificate of Bulgarian origin.
The main issue on this route is the records. If your ancestors’ names are written differently in civil records, for example after a change of alphabet or a forced name change, this must be documented. See the name equivalence certificate.
Requirements on the marriage route
If you are married to a Bulgarian citizen, the marriage must first be entered in Bulgarian records and a residence permit obtained. After that you are expected to stay married and live legally in Bulgaria for a certain period. Knowledge of Bulgarian is also tested on this route. For the permit steps see how to get a Bulgarian residence permit, and for our service see family reunification.
Requirements on the general (long-term residence) route
If you have no ancestry or marriage link to Bulgaria, you apply on the general route. It is the longest and the one with the most conditions:
- Legal residence: You must have lived in Bulgaria legally and continuously on a residence permit for the required period.
- Source of income: You must work in Bulgaria or have sufficient income.
- Bulgarian language: Your level is tested. See the Bulgarian language requirement for citizenship.
- Clean criminal record and truthful declarations.
Citizenship by investment was abolished by law in 2022. Being an investor does not move you ahead in the citizenship queue. Investors can only use the residence permit route; for citizenship the general conditions above apply.
Requirements for the child of a Bulgarian citizen
A child with a Bulgarian parent is a Bulgarian citizen by birth. If the child was born abroad, the birth must be entered in the Bulgarian civil register. There is no language or residence requirement. See birth registration and Bulgarian citizenship for children.
Which documents prove each requirement?
| Requirement | Documents usually requested |
|---|---|
| Identity and age | Passport or ID, birth certificate |
| Bulgarian origin | Certificate of Bulgarian origin, ancestors’ records, civil registry extracts |
| Marriage | Marriage certificate, proof of the spouse’s Bulgarian citizenship |
| Clean record | Criminal record certificate (with apostille and translation) |
| Residence | Residence permit card, address registration |
| Income | Employment contract, income proof or tax record |
The specialist decides which documents your file needs. Sometimes an extra document is requested; sometimes a document is not needed at all. Having your situation reviewed before expanding your own list saves time and money.
Common misunderstandings
- “Everybody has a Bulgarian exam.” Not true. The origin route has no language requirement.
- “I must live in Bulgaria.” Not on the origin route. Only the general and marriage routes ask for a residence period.
- “If I invest, I become a citizen.” This programme ended in 2022. Be careful with anyone who promises it.
- “Everyone must show income.” Not on the origin route.
- “If I meet the conditions, I will be accepted.” Meeting the conditions gives you the right to apply. The file is still examined and a decision is made. See how long Bulgarian citizenship takes.
Checklist before applying
- Decide which route you will use.
- Collect your civil registry extract, birth and marriage certificates.
- Check that names are spelled the same in all documents.
- Keep your criminal record certificate recent; official documents should generally not be older than a set period.
- Follow the filing steps in how to apply for Bulgarian citizenship.

Is there an income requirement?
Not on the origin route. Applicants on the general route must show a source of income.
