If your surname changed through marriage, the change enters the Bulgarian civil record only when the marriage is registered in Bulgaria. A name change in your home country, for example Türkiye, does not pass to Bulgaria on its own. Once the marriage is recorded, the new surname is entered, and then your Bulgarian ID card and passport must be renewed. A divorce follows a similar path.
This article explains how a surname change reaches Bulgarian records, why spelling differences cause trouble, and how to go back to a former surname after divorce.
How is a surname taken at marriage entered in Bulgarian records?
If you married abroad and changed your surname, Bulgaria does not learn about it automatically. The civil registers of the two countries are not connected. Your surname in the Bulgarian record stays as it was until you report the change.
The way to change it is to register the marriage in Bulgaria. When the marriage is entered in the Bulgarian civil record, the surname shown in the marriage certificate goes into the record too. We explained the process in our guide on registering a marriage in Bulgaria.
In general you need:
- The marriage certificate (international form) with an apostille.
- An official Bulgarian translation.
- An application through the municipality or a consulate.
How exactly the surname is entered together with the marriage can depend on your situation. We therefore recommend a review of your file before applying.
Important: The choice of surname is made at the time of marriage. The surname written in your marriage certificate is generally the one entered in Bulgarian records. Choosing correctly at the wedding avoids later corrections.
Spelling differences between your home country and Bulgaria
The same person’s name can look different in two countries. The reasons:
- Alphabet difference: Bulgaria uses Cyrillic. Letters such as the Turkish ç, ş, ğ, ı, ö, ü become different Cyrillic letters.
- Translator choice: The same surname may be written in Cyrillic in different ways by different translators.
- Old records: Older Bulgarian documents of family members may spell the name differently.
- Surname endings: In Bulgarian, surnames can take gender endings, which can create inconsistencies.
These differences look small but cause serious problems in official procedures. If the spelling in the marriage certificate does not match the Bulgarian ID, registration can stall.
When do you need a name equivalence certificate?
If the records in your home country and in Bulgaria refer to the same person but spell the name differently, a name equivalence certificate helps. It officially proves that two spellings belong to one person.
You may need it, for example, if your married surname is recorded with a different Cyrillic spelling, or if the spelling in an old Bulgarian document does not match current records. See what is a name equivalence certificate for details.
A practical tip: use one Cyrillic spelling of your surname in all documents, and do not change it once chosen.
Returning to your former surname after divorce
If you want to return to your former surname after a divorce, the divorce must first be recognised and recorded in Bulgaria. We described this in recognition of a divorce in Bulgaria.
The usual order is:
- Recognition of the divorce decision in Bulgaria.
- The return to the former surname appears in the decision or in the home-country civil record.
- Updating of the surname in the Bulgarian record.
- Renewal of the ID and passport.
Exactly which document is needed to enter the return to a former surname depends on the file, so we must review your papers to give a firm route.
Renewing your Bulgarian ID and passport
Once the surname changes in the record, the information on your old ID card and passport is out of date. After the change:
- A new Bulgarian ID card is issued with the new surname.
- The passport is renewed.
- Banks, insurers and property offices are informed with the new documents.
You can apply in Bulgaria at the relevant police unit, or at Bulgarian consulates abroad. Fees and times can change, so check current figures before applying. For the passport process see how to get a Bulgarian passport.
Step by step: updating your surname in the Bulgarian record
| Step | What is done | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check the marriage certificate and ID details | Note the surname spelling exactly as written |
| 2 | Prepare a name equivalence certificate if needed | Only if there is a spelling difference |
| 3 | Apostille and official Bulgarian translation | Use the same Cyrillic spelling in all documents |
| 4 | Marriage is entered in the Bulgarian civil record | Through the municipality or a consulate |
| 5 | ID card and passport are renewed | With the new surname |
The order of documents matters. Even a small inconsistency can lead to a refusal. Also see our guide on how to get a Bulgarian marriage certificate. For consistent translations you can use our translation service.
Most common mistakes
- Never registering the marriage in Bulgaria: The surname in the Bulgarian record stays the old one.
- Using a different Cyrillic spelling in each document: Records become inconsistent.
- Trying to return to a former surname without recognising the divorce: The process stops because the record is not updated.
- Forgetting to renew the ID: The old document no longer matches new papers.

Frequently asked questions
My surname changed in my home country. Does it change in Bulgaria automatically?
No. The civil records of the two countries are not connected. The new surname enters the record when the marriage is registered in Bulgaria.
Is it a problem if my Bulgarian ID keeps the old surname?
If the surname is not updated, your old ID does not match your new documents. This can cause trouble with banks, property and travel, so updating the record is recommended.
Is a name equivalence certificate needed for every surname change?
No. It is requested only when the spelling in two records differs and you must prove you are the same person.
I divorced and want my former surname back. What is the first step?
The first step is recognition of your divorce decision in Bulgaria. After the record is updated, the surname and ID steps follow.
