Bulgarian citizenship for adult children

Yes. An adult child, aged 18 or over, of a Bulgarian parent can become a Bulgarian citizen. The route depends on when the parent acquired citizenship. If the parent was already a Bulgarian citizen when you were born, you are a citizen by birth and only a birth registration is needed (about 2-3 months). If the parent became a citizen after your birth, you apply yourself on the basis of Bulgarian origin.

First question: when did your parent become a Bulgarian citizen?

Compare the date on your parent’s Bulgarian citizenship document (or Bulgarian birth certificate) with your own date of birth.

Situation Route Typical time
Parent was a Bulgarian citizen when you were born (for example, born in Bulgaria and never lost citizenship) Birth registration 2-3 months
Parent obtained citizenship after you were born (naturalisation or restoration) Citizenship application on the basis of Bulgarian origin 1.5-3 years

Route 1: Birth registration (parent was a citizen at your birth)

Under the Bulgarian Citizenship Act, a person with at least one Bulgarian-citizen parent is a citizen by birth, and there is no age limit. Even at 30, your birth is entered in the Bulgarian civil registry, you receive an EGN and you can apply for a passport. The steps are the same as for young children: an apostilled birth record, a Bulgarian translation and registration at the municipality. See our guide to birth registration and citizenship for children.

This route fits, in particular:

  • parents who were born in Bulgaria, kept their citizenship, left the country and had children abroad,
  • children born after a parent had obtained citizenship.

Route 2: Application on the basis of Bulgarian origin (parent became a citizen later)

If your parent obtained citizenship after your birth, you are not a citizen by birth. However, as the child of a parent of Bulgarian origin you can apply on the basis of Bulgarian origin. On this route:

  • no residence, income or Bulgarian language exam is required,
  • you prove your origin with your Bulgarian parent’s documents (Bulgarian birth certificate, citizenship document) and the civil records showing your link to the parent,
  • the application goes to the Ministry of Justice in Sofia or through Bulgarian consulates, and takes 1.5-3 years.

For the general procedure, see how to apply for Bulgarian citizenship and citizenship through your father.

How do adults get a Bulgarian passport?

After the birth registration, the adult child receives an EGN and a Bulgarian birth certificate. Then you apply for an ID card and passport. Adults apply in person; parental consent is not needed as it is for minors. The application can be made in Bulgaria or at a Bulgarian consulate abroad. Fees and validity periods change, so we confirm them from the official source before applying. With the passport you can travel visa-free in the Schengen area and have the right to live and work in EU countries. The process is described in how to get a Bulgarian passport.

Do surnames and spelling cause problems?

For adults, names are the most common stumbling block. The name in your home-country record is transliterated into Cyrillic for Bulgarian documents. Your parent’s surname in Bulgarian records may differ from yours: Bulgarian surnames often end in “-ov” or “-ova”, while the foreign record may show a different form. In such cases one consistent spelling is chosen in the translation and, if necessary, a name equivalence certificate is prepared. If two different spellings are used for the same person, the authority may treat them as two people, and the file stalls.

Example family situations

Situation Correct route
Father was born in Bulgaria and never lost citizenship; his 30-year-old son was born abroad. Birth registration. The son is a citizen by descent.
Mother lost Bulgarian citizenship after leaving, then regained it; the child was born in between. Depends on dates. Usually an application on the basis of origin; not decided without the documents.
Father has died; the child holds his Bulgarian documents. Birth registration or origin-based application; his death does not prevent it.
Three siblings: two born before, one after the parent’s citizenship. The youngest by birth registration; the others on the basis of origin, using the same parental documents.

Different routes within one family are very common. Planning siblings’ files together saves time because the same documents are reused.

Documents (summary)

  • Your own civil registry extract showing parents’ details, apostilled and translated,
  • the Bulgarian parent’s Bulgarian birth certificate or citizenship document,
  • copy of your passport and ID,
  • (Route 2) criminal record certificate and the citizenship application form,
  • a name equivalence certificate if names differ.

We explain how to prepare the papers in our civil registry extract and apostille guide.

Common mistakes

  • Not checking the date of the parent’s citizenship: Starting on the wrong route costs months.
  • Applying without the parent’s Bulgarian documents: They are the basis of the file.
  • Missing different spellings in your records: A name mismatch stops registration at the municipality.
  • Submitting a civil record without an apostille: It will not be accepted.

What about minor siblings?

When a parent is admitted to citizenship, children under 18 can usually be included in the application. If they were not included, an application for the minors can be made later. Where a family has both adult and minor children, the best order is planned file by file.

What does citizenship give you?

For an adult child, Bulgarian citizenship also means European Union citizenship: the right to live, study and work across the EU. Bulgaria allows dual citizenship, so you normally do not give up your other nationality. We discuss this in the advantages of dual citizenship. Obligations come with the rights; see rights and obligations after citizenship.

How do you know which route suits you?

Send us your parent’s Bulgarian documents and your own date of birth. In our free document review we determine whether your file goes by birth registration or by citizenship application. Choosing the right route can save months or even years. For the full process, see our citizenship services, or book an online appointment.

Frequently asked questions

My father is a Bulgarian citizen and I am 25. Can I get citizenship?

Yes. If he was a citizen when you were born, a birth registration takes 2-3 months. If he obtained citizenship later, you apply on the basis of Bulgarian origin.

Does an adult child need to speak Bulgarian?

No. Applications based on Bulgarian origin have no language exam, and none is required for birth registration.

Can my own children become citizens too?

Children born after you became a Bulgarian citizen are citizens by birth and are registered through birth registration. For children born earlier, the route depends on whether they are minors or adults.

Can I apply if my parent has died?

Yes. Documents showing your parent’s Bulgarian citizenship or origin are enough. See the related article on our site for details.
