The documents for a Bulgarian residence permit depend on the type of permit. Common items are a valid passport, the D visa, a biometric photo, an apostilled police clearance, health insurance and proof of accommodation. Family reunification adds a marriage record, commercial representation adds BCCI registration and the parent company’s papers. Official documents normally need an apostille and a Bulgarian translation.
Why does the document list change?
A Bulgarian residence permit is not one single permit. Separate files are prepared for family, commercial representation, a company, work and study. Each file has to prove something different: a marriage for family reunification, a real and tax-compliant company for representation, a headcount for a company.
This article shows in plain terms which document is requested on which route. Amounts and detailed numbers change with the date and the consulate, so we do not quote figures. Confirm the current list with the consulate or your adviser before you apply. To compare the routes first, see how to get a Bulgarian residence permit.
Documents common to all applications
- a valid passport and copies of identity documents,
- the type D visa (issued by the consulate; see what is the Bulgarian type D visa),
- a biometric photo, recent and compliant with the standard,
- a police clearance certificate, usually apostilled and translated,
- health insurance valid in Bulgaria,
- proof of accommodation: a lease or an address declaration,
- proof of means of subsistence, such as a bank statement or income document,
- the application form and fee receipt.
We do not give a figure for the required funds. Amounts in older articles may be out of date; Bulgaria has used the euro since 2026.
Documents for family reunification
If you apply as the spouse or child of a Bulgarian citizen, you also need:
| Document | Note |
|---|---|
| Marriage certificate | Apostilled, translated into Bulgarian; the marriage must be in the Bulgarian civil record |
| The Bulgarian citizen’s ID | Copy of the ID card or passport |
| Declarations | Notarised statements that the marriage is genuine and that you will live together |
| Civil registry extract | Shows civil status, apostilled |
| For a child | Birth certificate and a document showing the child’s Bulgarian citizenship |
The scope of the notarised declarations may change, so ask the consulate for the current model. Each document is covered in Bulgaria family reunification visa and documents. The whole marriage-based residence route is in residence permit through a Bulgarian spouse.
Documents for commercial representation
On this route the file has two parts: documents from Bulgaria and documents from the parent company.
From Bulgaria:
- the BCCI (Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) registration certificate for the representation,
- the BULSTAT registration,
- an office lease of at least 1 year.
From the parent company:
- the trade register extract and a certificate of activity,
- the decision to open the representation and the decision to appoint the representative,
- proof of turnover: the parent company’s turnover must be at least the equivalent of 100,000 leva,
- proof that there is no tax debt: the last 2 years at first registration, the last year at renewal.
Documents should be no older than 6 months. At most 2 representatives per office can receive residence. See residence permit through commercial representation for the full route and documents for a representative’s D visa for the consulate stage. If you are choosing between routes, read representation or company.
Documents for a company route
If you set up a company in Bulgaria and apply as a manager, the file includes the incorporation documents, the trade register entry and records of employment. At least 10 full-time Bulgarian employees per foreigner must be employed (Foreigners Act art. 24/1/2). Insurance and payroll records of the employees belong in the file.
Additional documents for work and study
For work, the employment contract with the employer and the employer’s company documents are requested. For study, you need the admission letter and proof of enrolment. These routes may have additional conditions, so confirm the current list before you apply.
How to prepare documents: apostille and translation
Official documents issued abroad (marriage, police clearance, company papers) go through these steps to be accepted in Bulgaria:
- Apostille: the competent authority of the issuing country certifies the document.
- Official Bulgarian translation: a sworn translator translates it. Our translation service helps at this stage.
- Validity: documents should usually be no older than 6 months.
For general information on apostilles, see civil registry extract and apostille guide.
The right order of preparation
The right order saves time:
- First decide which type of permit you will apply for.
- Then obtain the documents from your home country (marriage, police clearance, civil records) and have them apostilled.
- Next have them translated. If a document is changed after translation, the translation must be redone.
- Prepare the Bulgarian-side documents (lease, BCCI registration, health insurance).
- Finally check the dates. None should be older than 6 months.
Common document mistakes
- Outdated documents: an expired police clearance or company paper.
- Missing apostille or translation.
- Name differences: names that do not match between the passport, civil record and marriage certificate. Additional documents may be requested.
- Marriage not entered in the Bulgarian record: the most common stumbling block in family reunification.
- A lease that is too short: a lease of at least 1 year is expected for representation.
After the card: renewal
Documents are refreshed again for renewal. The application is filed at the Migration Directorate at least 14 days before expiry. At renewal, tax compliance is checked for the last year. See Bulgarian residence permit renewal. After 5 years of uninterrupted residence, see Bulgaria permanent residence.

Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need in my bank account for a residence permit?
The amount depends on the permit type and the date of application, and figures in old articles may be outdated. Confirm the current amount with the consulate or your adviser.
Do all documents need an apostille?
Official documents issued abroad normally need an apostille and an official Bulgarian translation. Check which of your documents need an apostille before applying.
Do the documents expire?
Yes. Official documents are normally expected to be issued within the last 6 months. An older document can cause the file to be returned.
My marriage was concluded abroad. What should I do?
The marriage must be entered in the Bulgarian civil record. This is done through the municipality or consulate with an apostilled marriage record and an official Bulgarian translation.
Can you prepare the documents for me?
Yes. We help with the document list, direction on apostille and translation, checking the file and follow-up.
